Assembly members unite to campaign for Fairer Votes

Caroline joined Assembly members from the Labour, Green and Conservative parties at City Hall to support a Yes vote in the referendum on the 5th May.

Labour’s Len Duvall AM, Andrew Boff AM a Conservative member, and Darren Johnson from the Greens, alongside Caroline for the Liberal Democrats are encouraging Londoners to vote yes for a better voting system to elect our MPs on 5th May. The system means voters get to show their preference for candidates and every MP will be elected with over 50% of votes.

Campaigning in Sutton on Fairer Votes and transport

Caroline was out and about in Sutton with Paul Burstow MP talking to residents about the Fairer Votes referendum and discussing local issues.

Caroline also took the opportunity to look at some local transport concerns with Paul Burstow MP and London Assembly Candidate Shas Sheehan.

"It was really interesting talking to local residents in Sutton to hear about local concerns. The overwhelming message was the need for a better voting system!" commented Caroline.

Addressing Highgate bus concerns

Caroline Pidgeon AM joined local Lib Dem Councillors for Highgate ward in Haringey - Cllr Rachel Allison and Cllr Bob Hare - on Friday 18th March for a meeting with members of the Highgate Society and other local councillors from Camden about buses in Highgate, and particularly problems with the bus stand in the middle of South Grove, Highgate Village.

"It was clear from our walkabout and discussions that there are serious problems with the 271 bus stands in the middle of the square. The Highgate Society has done a huge amount of work analysing the bus routes across the area and various options that could be explored to finesse the routes and result in a community space" commented Caroline Pidgeon.

Lib Dems discuss Battersea residents' concerns

Lib Dem Assembly Members Caroline Pidgeon AM and Mike Tuffrey AM met local Lib Dem campaigners in Battersea to look at local issues on Tuesday 15th March ahead of the People’s Question Time in Battersea Arts Centre.

The team discussed concerns about the redevelopment plans for Clapham Junction station and the problems of poor air quality, as well as other transport issues.

“It was good to talk to local residents and Lib Dem Campaigners about a number of key issues in Clapham and Battersea. Local people really want to see the cycle hire scheme expanded and want to ensure that Clapham Junction becomes a fully accessible station” commented Caroline Pidgeon.

Lib Dems fight for Ealing Broadway station upgrade

Crossrail's latest design proposals for Ealing Broadway station would delay the station completion by at least two years and downgrade the planned station by removng the three planned escalators and two new footbridges planned across the tracks.

Caroline Pidgeon, Leader of the London Assembly Liberal Democrat Group and Vice Chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee came to Ealing Broadway last week to see for herself what this could mean for Ealing Broadway station.

Campaigning in Oldham East and Saddleworth

The Liberal Democrat Group on the London Assembly - Caroline Pidgeon, Dee Doocey and Mike Tuffrey - went up to Oldham on Saturday 8th January to help out in the Oldham East and Saddleworth by-election.

The team spent the day knocking doors and talking to local residents in villages in the constituency, as well as enjoying a country pub lunch!

“It was super to be able to go up to Oldham East and Saddleworth as a Group. Elwyn Watkins has clearly worked really hard with the local team and is really well known in the constituency. I hope voters will support Elwyn to be their next MP” commented Caroline.

Site visit highlights A243 problems for Chessington residents

Caroline Pidgeon AM joined Lib Dem Cllr Tricia Bamford and officers from Transport for London and Kingston Council on Tuesday 14th December to have a look at a number of issues on the A243 and the impact they are having on local residents.

Caroline, Tricia and the officers walked along the A243 looking at a number of serious problems, including:

  • The need for pedestrian phases on the A243 by Merritt Gardens to help the local schools and health centre, as well as by the Hook Centre further down.
  • The need for more signage and road markings at the Bridge Road roundabout (pictured) where traffic congestion is increasing and there are problems with vehicles not getting into the correct lane.
  • The future plans for the Malden Rushett junction which have been drawn up and consulted on, but will need to be phased in over a number of years due to funding issues.

Caroline joins Surrey Docks residents' protest against Clipper cuts

Caroline Pidgeon AM joined Lib Dem Councillor David Hubber, and local residents in Surrey Docks, to protest about the cuts being made to evening services by Thames Clippers. (Read about the service cuts here.)

Supporting the protesters, Caroline said "The Mayor must look at how to support river transport across London".
