Huge work is needed to make London’s roads safe for cyclists

Caroline Pidgeon AM, Liberal Democrat London Assembly transport spokesperson, commenting on the publication today of 2013 figures measuring the number of cyclists killed and seriously injured in London, said:

“Of course this fall in serious injuries in 2013 compared to 2012 is welcome, but in reality these figures provide absolutely no grounds for complacency.

“It is absolutely clear that huge amount of further work is necessary to make London’s roads safer for all cyclists, whether young or old, male or female.

Virgin Media shows blatant disregard for road users

The MayorWatch site reports Transport for London has begun prosecution proceedings against Virgin Media (one of its own major sponsors) for carrying out roadworks unsafely in Sutton last October.

Virgin Media has already received a £14,300 fine this year for "endangering the lives of residents and motorists" when work was carried out in breach of safety rules in Richmond.

Action needed now for a safer Kilburn High Road

Caroline Pidgeon, Lib Dem Leader on the London Assembly, has joined Kilburn and West Hampstead Lib Dems in their campaign for a safer Kilburn High Road for pedestrians and cyclists.

Kilburn High Road is one of the most dangerous streets in Camden. Shocking new statistics report there were 144 collisions on the High Road in the last three years. 45% (65) of these incidents involved pedestrians and cyclists, with 19 people killed or seriously injured.

Richmond Station bus stops - commuters suffer through a long running saga

Richmond Liberal Democrat councillors are pressing Transport for London to sort out the shambolic bus stop situation outside Richmond Station.

“The situation is ridiculous”, said Jerry Elloy, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Transport.

“We have pressed the Council Officers to find out why the second bus stop has not been reinstated, and they blame Transport for London, citing internal disagreements between their London Buses Section, and the Public Carriageway Section which deals with taxis.

The HGV Taskforce at work

Caroline joined the London HGV Taskforce on Wednesday 16th April to see first hand the work they do in making our streets safer for all road users including cyclists and pedestrians.

The team carry out detailed checks on lorries on London's Streets and pick up many issues from the security of the goods being carried in the lorry to threadbare tyres, drivers not taking their breaks and overloaded vehicles.

Horrific congestion forecasts show we need a new approach

As Transport for London released figures showing that traffic congestion in central London is on track to rise 60% based on current policies and strategies, Caroline Pidgeon said:

"The new congestion forecasts are simply horrific. The Mayor should prioritise buses and cyclists in the centre of the capital instead of pandering to everyone and ultimately failing everyone.

"The congestion charge should be updated annually, as public transport fares are, and levied at different levels at different times of day."
