Silencing the Waterloo Tannoy will make it inaccessible to the blind

As South West Trains plans a trial of silencing Tannoy announcements at Waterloo station, Caroline Pidgeon expressed her strong opposition to a plan that will make travel much harder for passengers with visual disabilities.

“This is one of the most absurd decisions by a train company I have ever come across. Visual and audible announcements are vital... and it would be a scandal if such an important station as Waterloo was made inaccessible to any of its passengers.”

TfL employees' parking fines - a waste of money and a double standard

As a Freedom of Information request revealed that Transport for London has payed £170,000 in the last four years to cover its own employees' parking fines, Caroline Pidgeon commented:

"These fines are not only a serious waste of money by TfL but they also show that too many TfL staff believe in the mantra of 'do as I say, not as I do' when it comes to traffic enforcement..

"Transport for London has no hesitation in handing out penalty charge notices for people who park on red routes or who get caught in yellow boxes.

Caroline joins Guide Dogs for the Blind in supporting safe roads for everyone

Caroline recently joined up with Guide Dogs for the Blind and the London Cycling Campaign in their campaign to ensure that cyclists are aware of the needs of blind people, especially at pedestrian crossings.

The campaign recognises that the vast majority of cyclists are very responsible, however due to the actions of a minority of cyclists problems often face blind people when crossing the road.

Inflation busting fare rises cannot be justified

Caroline Pidgeon AM, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group and transport spokesperson, commenting on the publication today of July’s inflation rate, which is used as the benchmark for 2015 Transport for London fares, said:

“The fall in inflation last month is obviously welcome - however, a rise in TfL fares by inflation plus 1 per cent cannot be justified next year.

South-east London needs Bakerloo extension to unleash its potential

As a public consultation began on plans to extend the Bakerloo line to Old Kent Road, Catford, Beckenham and Bromley, Caroline Pidgeon expressed her strong support for the extension and commented:

“Extending the Tube into Southwark, Lewisham and Bromley would unleash huge economic opportunities.

“After decades of being left behind it is time south-east London was given the transport links it needs to truly unleash its potential.”

Cycle hire scheme still has a very long way to go to reach its full potential

Speaking ahead of the fourth anniversary of the London cycle hire scheme (Wednesday 30th July), Caroline Pidgeon AM, leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, has published new evidence showing the cycle hire scheme has a long way to go to reach the usage per bike that was seen during the Summer of 2012. Her latest research confirms the importance of Transport for London making it easier for people to use the cycle hire scheme, including through new payment methods such as by Oyster and contactless payment.

TfL needs to show urgency in tackling telecoms waste

The Mayor's Independent Investment Programme Group has reviewed Transport for London's £200m annual spending on telecommunications, and rated it as "not fit for purpose", with duplication, fragmentation and missed opportunities.

Caroline Pidgeon commented:

“TfL needs to show real urgency in tackling what appears to be significant waste in telecommunications. It seems that these savings are low lying fruit which TfL should have picked a long time ago. The public would be far more understanding about changes that directly affect them, such as ending cash fares on buses, if significant internal waste had truly been eradicated first.”
